This panel discussion will consider the medium of pastel and its application over the centuries, seen from the different perspectives of the curator and scholar, the collector and patron, and the artist and creator. What is distinctive about the pastel medium, what can an artist do with it, what have they done over the centuries, and what are they doing now? Also in the spotlight will be the story of how pastels have been appreciated and understood, from the 18th century to the present day, and whether they should be considered as paintings, drawings or neither.

Moderated by Sotheby's Worldwide Head of Old Master Drawings, Gregory Rubinstein, the panel will consist of: Elizabeth M. Eveillard, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Frick Collection, and, with her husband Jean-Marie, one of the world's leading collectors of works on paper; Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, the Frick Collection, and a notable scholar of drawings and pastels from the 16th to the 18th century; and the artist Nicolas Party, whose remarkable works in pastel are both grounded in the works of earlier exponents of the medium, and entirely modern.

This event is organized in partnership with Sotheby's.
