The lecture will focus on an exceptional album of over one hundred and thirty original drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755), the foremost eighteenth-century animal painter. The album, which will be offered at auction at Christie's New York on 25 January, offers a complete illustration of the first six books of fables by the celebrated French poet Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1696). The drawings, which gained wide popularity in the form of engravings made for lavish illustrated edition of La Fontaine's poems, provide a unique panorama of urban and especially rural life in eighteenth-century France, as well as of Oudry's mastery as draftsman and storyteller.
The lecture will be given by Alan Wintermute, senior consultant at Christie's in the Old Masters Group and a preeminent expert on French paintings and drawings of the eighteenth century.
