Exhibition Title

Sorolla, Drawings from the Belle Époque and Other Highlights

Exhibition Description

Colnaghi’s London exhibition, Sorolla: A Celebration of Life, continues in New York. Together with John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini, Joaquin Sorolla was the most celebrated painter of his time, whose output is key to understanding fin de siècle European art. Hailing from private collections, the artworks included encompass many of Sorolla’s most recurrent themes, such as social realism, insightful portraiture and scenes en plein air, most notably sea studies.

Alongside the Sorolla paintings, Colnaghi Elliott Master Drawings is presenting a group of works on paper from the French Belle Époque. Amongst these are four lively sheets by Boldini, a quasi Symbolist portrait of the celebrated painter Juana Romani by Victor Prouvé and a beautiful pastel by Marthe La Lyre Levesques of her husband, the artist Adolphe La Lyre.

Finally, Colnaghi Elliott Master Drawings will exhibit a small number of other highlights from the 17th to the 20th centuries, including a highly important tapestry design by Jacob Jordaens.
