Further Information
Cromek was born in London, the son of an engraver, and was apprenticed to a portrait painter in Wakefield, Yorkshire. He soon turned to landscape and lived and worked on the Continent, mainly Rome, from 1831 to 1849. He built up a successful teaching there but was forced to return home in 1849 by Garibaldi's attack on Rome.
